Why Speech Therapy Works?
The ability to communicate with others is essential to healthy development. Communication difficulties can negatively impact a child’s education, social development, and confidence. Speech Therapy Works Aurora provides in-school and in-home speech therapy to children with mild to severe speech and language disorders including articulatory difficulties, stuttering, language delay, trouble reading and writing, and social-pragmatic language difficulties. Additionally, we treat speech and language disorders resulting from autism, Down Syndrome, apraxia, TBI, and developmental delays.
When to contact Speech Therapy Works Aurora
At Speech Therapy Works, we believe in early intervention and we treat children as young as 16 months old. Studies show that results dramatically improve when speech therapy is implemented as early as possible. If you are concerned about your child’s speech, please contact us. You do not need a doctor’s referral and most extended health insurance packages or work benefits cover speech therapy.
In-home assessment
A registered speech-language pathologist will come to your home to provide the initial assessment. Through a series of informal and formal tests, including Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF), Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation (GFTA), Grey Oral Reading Test (GORT), the S-LP will determine areas of speech difficulty and will devise an appropriate treatment plan. At Speech Therapy Works Aurora, we strive to create a fun, play-based environment right from the assessment so that children will feel motivated to continue with the therapy.
Speech therapy sessions
Speech therapy sessions usually occur once or twice a week and are generally one hour in length Sessions can be held at the child’s home, school, or day care. Offering therapy in a location where the child is already familiar ensures that they will be comfortable. Speech therapists bring their own toys and games to each session and devise activities targeting the speech goals outlined by the initial assessment. Studies have shown that the more engaged a child is in the therapy, the more effective it will be. Our speech therapists are known to be fun, engaging, and personable and strive to provide treatment that is both effective and enjoyable. Parents or caregivers may also be involved in the session; in doing so the S-LP can educate them on strategies to be implemented outside of the therapy session. Our speech-language pathologists are also trained in a variety of programs including Lidcombe, PROMPT, behaviour management strategies, and Early Start Denver Model (ESDM).
At Speech Therapy Works Aurora, we believe in a fun, personalized and effective approach to speech therapy.
