SPEECH THERAPY FOR CHILDREN – ENCOURAGING SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SKILLS ESSENTIAL FOR CHILDREN TO ENJOY FUTURE SUCCESS

Strong speech and language skills are essential to a child’s growth and development, especially when it comes to reading and writing. May is Speech and Language Month and, in celebration, there will be special events being held across the area at local Ontario Early Years Centres (OEYC). These speech and language events will be hosted by the Health Unit nurses to raise awareness and encourage parents and caregivers to ‘play, talk, read and listen’ to their little ones.
Parents often think that their child is just quieter or shy towards others, when there may be an underlying speech and/or language delay. The author of this article lists several signs that parents and caregivers should look for in children, these include: difficulty following directions, difficult to understand, relies on gestures for communication, pronunciation difficulties, and behaviour problems. It is common to think that these problems may go away or correct themselves as the child ages. When noticing any one of these signs it is important to address them early and contact a Speech and Language Pathologist.
See the article for more information about these events and what the Health Unit nurses are saying.
